August 25 is Sean Connery day…
THUNDERBALL (1965) / THE UNTOUCHABLES (1987) - 70mm!!
Monday, August 25 - 7:30PM Aero Theatre
Don’t even think of bringing a knife to a gun fight for this double feature celebrating all things Connery…Sean Connery.
First Connery is THE James Bond in THUNDERBALL as he races to find a pair of stolen nuclear weapons, and engages in a massive (and awesome) underwater battle with SPECTRE henchmen.
Then Connery joins Kevin Costner’s THE UNTOUCHABLES, battling notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone (Robert De Niro) and winning a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his efforts.
Here endeth the lesson…
A Centennial Salute to Alec Guinness
LAST HOLIDAY (1950) / THE CARD (1952)
Tonight (August 14) - 7:30PM Aero Theatre
Presented by the American Cinematheque in collaboration with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Los Angeles.
LAST HOLIDAY - A mistake at the doctor’s office leaves George Bird (Alec Guinness) convinced he has only weeks to live. Determined to enjoy his final days, the humble salesman checks into a ritzy hotel, whose elite residents – unaware of Bird’s diagnosis - soon embrace him as one of their own. With Bernard Lee and Wilfrid Hyde-White.
THE CARD - Spy novelist Eric Ambler might have seemed an unlikely choice to adapt Arnold Bennett’s novel about a charming go-getter, but the result is a thoroughly enjoyable comedy. Alec Guinness plays one of his first romantic leads as Denry Machin, a young man whose ambition and occasional willingness to bend the rules help him rise through the ranks of society. Among the women who catch his eye are Glynis Johns, Valerie Hobson and future singing star Petula Clark.
Last Holiday is a huge favorite of mine so if you live in the area I highly recommend you go and watch it!
